New Personalizable Birth Flower Journals

New Personalizable Birth Flower Journals

Nicolet Barclay

Over Christmas break, I found an old journal in my art studio. I opened it up and started reading through the entries. The journal was from five years ago, and I remember writing down odd thoughts and feelings, wondering if any of it really mattered.

One entry stood out—I wrote about how one of my good friends recommended that I apply for a role at my current employer. It’s funny to think about how much has changed since then. But revisiting my thoughts from five years ago, remembering how I felt back then, and reflecting on who I am now was such a fascinating experience.

That moment planted a seed in my mind—I couldn’t stop thinking about how I should start journaling again. Then, as I often do, I took it a step further: What if I designed my own journals?

I wanted to create a collection that felt personal and unique. While brainstorming, I remembered a beautiful necklace I had bought on a work trip to Texas, featuring my birth flower, the chrysanthemum. That memory sparked an idea: I had been wanting to create a collection of illustrations featuring each birth flower—maybe this was my chance!

So, over the next six weeks, I illustrated each of the 12 birth flowers and designed a coordinating pattern for each one. From there, I created a collection of personalizable journals that feature these birth flowers, with a space on the cover for a name, word, city, flower—whatever feels meaningful—and an area inside for a custom message.

I’m so excited to finally share this project with you! Just in time for Mother’s Day, I’ve also designed a collection of Mother’s Day cards. As a new mom myself, this felt like the perfect time to launch.
